Edward Beecher was born on August 27, 1803 at East Hampton, Long Island, New York, the second son of Lyman Beecher. Charles, his brother and writer of his biography, was born in 1815. The brothers and their nine other siblings were brought up in a religious household. Edward thoroughly believed in the pre-existence of the soul, which was viewed as heresy by some.
